What to do in Edam aside from a visit to the cheese market?

You can visit one of the museums in the cultural, historical buildings of Edam – for example – the Edam museum, the ‘Kaaswaag’ or the cheese and trading store.
Edam museum The oldest museum in the area takes you through the rich history of Edam. The museum is located in the old centre – in two very characteristic buildings. The museum collection is comprised of paintings, prints and a collection of objects from the Boot Family, from the rich history of ship building, architecture, ceramic industry, notable families and ordinary daily life. The museum is divided into two buildings – the ‘Steenen Coopmanshuys’ and ‘ Het Stadhuis’. You can find more information on opening times and current exhibitions on the Edamsmuseum.nl website.

Merchandise cheese store

Since 1916 all cheeses are ripened in the traditional merchandise warehouse in the out port of Edam. Behind a row of famous historical facades are the cheese warehouses from the 18th century. You can here try all the cheeses from the area.
In 1916 the cheese traders ‘ Schardam and Groot settled in Edam port with their cheese exports association.

27 small cheese factories delivered their cheeses and the association  exported them abroad. A control department made sure that the delivered cheeses were of a high enough quality.
